Excessive Fatigue

Also Known As Chronic Fatigue

Excessive (or chronic) fatigue is a common symptom across many endocrine disorders. Although it is something difficult to measure, fatigue can be both physical and mental. It can impact a person's ability to function and concentrate on everyday tasks. The question is, what's considered normal tiredness and when does it cross the line toward excessive fatigue?

Sleepy_Woman_sm.jpgThe Following Circumstances Are Associated With Normal Tiredness:

  • Less energy related to aging
  • Not sleeping for the required amount of time (seven to eight hours of sleep each night for adults 18 and up)
  • Lacking quality or deep sleep, even when getting enough hours
  • Too much caffeine consumption (diminishes sleep quality at night)
  • Overworking the body or staying too busy without refueling or proper nutrition
  • Too little activity AKA couch potato syndrome, which ironically leads to more tiredness
  • Medications that cause drowsiness (antihistamines such as those in cold and flu meds, prescription pain meds, beta blockers for heart disease, or anti-depressants)

It's Time To See A Doctor If:

  • Fatigue persists for two to four weeks
  • Fatigue is accompanied by depression, grief, or stress
  • Fatigue is accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, irregular heart rate, or dizziness
  • Fatigue is accompanied by muscle or joint pain not associated with exercise or injury
  • Fatigue interferes with day to day activities
